Understanding DTC Codes in Diagnostics:
Understanding DTC codes is crucial for effective vehicle diagnostics. They provide a starting point for technicians to investigate further issues. By interpreting these codes accurately, our ASE-certified technicians can perform targeted tests and repairs, ensuring that your vehicle is operating reliably and safely.

Structure of DTC Codes:
DTC codes are typically five characters long, consisting of a letter followed by four numbers. Each character provides crucial information about the nature and location of the problem:

First Character (Letter):

P: Powertrain (engine, transmission, and associated components)
C: Chassis (mechanical systems such as brakes and suspension)
B: Body (components within the passenger compartment)
U: Network & vehicle integration (communication between control modules)

Second Character (Number):

0: Standardized or generic code, applicable across all vehicles.
1: Manufacturer-specific code, indicating a problem unique to a particular make or model.

Third Character (Number):
This includes the identification of subsystems involved in the malfunction. For example:

0: Fuel and air metering, including auxiliary emission controls
1: Fuel and air metering
2: Fuel and air metering (injector circuit)
3: Ignition system or misfires
4: Auxiliary emission controls
5: Vehicle speed control and idle control systems
6: Computer and output circuit
7: Transmission

Fourth and Fifth Characters (Numbers):
These digits provide a specific fault index, detailing the exact issue within the subsystem. The meanings of these characters can vary, so referring to a DTC code list specific to your vehicle is essential for accurate diagnostics.

This does not apply to all manufacturers, however, it provides some insight for many of the common makes on Colorado roads.
