Check Engine Light On? What It Actually Means and When Not to Ignore It

Check Engine Light On? What It Actually Means and When Not to Ignore It

We once had a customer come in laughing about her brother-in-law, who drove for six months with a happy face sticker over his check engine light. His logic was simple: if he couldn’t see it, it wasn’t a problem. The car still drove fine, so whatever the light was fussing about could wait.

It waited right up until his catalytic converter failed on a road trip through Glenwood Canyon. He spent the afternoon stuck on the side of I-70, waiting for a long, expensive tow, while a manageable repair turned into a much bigger bill. He laughs about it now, but nobody was laughing that day.

With a little good information, we hope you spend your Glenwood trip in the hot springs, not in hot water.

What Your Check Engine Light Is Really Telling You

Every vehicle built since 1996 has an on-board diagnostic system, called OBD-II, that constantly monitors the engine, transmission, and emissions systems. When something runs outside its normal range, the vehicle’s computer stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and turns on the check engine light.

The light is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It tells you something needs attention, but not exactly what. Take P0420, one of the most common codes we see. It points to low catalytic converter efficiency, but the cause could be:

  • A failing oxygen sensor
  • An exhaust leak
  • The catalytic converter itself

That’s why reading the code is only the first step. The real work is figuring out what that code means for your specific vehicle, and that takes experience. Our sister shop, Applewood Auto Service, breaks down more common causes in Decoding the Check Engine Light.

In the Denver metro area, the light matters for another reason. If it’s on during your Air Care Colorado emissions test, your vehicle can fail the inspection or get an advisory.

Why “It Still Drives Fine” Isn’t the Same as “It’s Fine”

This is where a lot of drivers get into trouble. A car can feel completely normal while something underneath is getting worse. Systems like fuel mixture, ignition timing, and emissions control don’t always change how the car drives, at least not right away.

A small misfire is a good example. You might not feel it behind the wheel, but unburned fuel ends up in the exhaust and overheats the catalytic converter. Replacing a catalytic converter can cost thousands of dollars. Worn spark plugs are one of the most common causes of misfires.

We see this a lot on Subaru Foresters and Outbacks. A typical case is a Forester at around 130,000 miles with a P0420 code that’s been on for months. Caught early, the fix might be an oxygen sensor. Left alone long enough, it can mean a catalytic converter replacement that runs into the thousands.

It also matters whether the light is steady or flashing:

  • Steady light: A problem exists, but it usually isn’t an emergency. Have it checked soon.
  • Flashing light: This usually means a severe misfire that can damage the engine and catalytic converter. Stop driving as soon as it’s safe and have the vehicle checked right away.

Either way, “the car still runs” is not the same as “nothing is wrong.” When your car asks for help, listen.

What Applewood Auto Care Can Do

When your check engine light comes on, one does not simply clear the code and send you on your way. That little amber eye on your dash is ever watchful, and it’s telling you something real. At Applewood Auto Care, we:

  • Read the stored codes with professional-grade diagnostic equipment
  • Find the root cause, whether that means testing sensors, inspecting the ignition system, or checking for exhaust and emissions problems
  • Explain what we found in plain language, along with your options

If the issue is minor, we’ll tell you that too. Our goal is an honest diagnosis you can trust, so you’re never left wondering whether a repair is really necessary.

We also help prevent the problems that turn the light on in the first place. Our Wynn’s USA fuel system cleaning removes carbon buildup from fuel injectors and intake valves, which helps your engine keep the right fuel mixture and lowers the risk of misfires. Every repair is backed by our 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.

If your check engine light has been on for a while and you’ve been telling yourself it’s probably nothing, have it looked at before a small issue turns into a big one. Don’t let a little amber light ruin your next road trip. Stop by Applewood Auto Care in Lakewood, and let us give you a real answer instead of a guess.
